Q: What are laminate floors?

A: Laminate floors are a versatile and durable flooring category with the appearance of a hardwood floor. Made up of several layers of materials bonded together under high pressure, the top layers consist of a high resolution image of hardwood flooring topped by an extremely hard clear coating. They come in planks that are designed to be “clicked” together and “floated” over a moisture barrier pad.
Q: Can I install it myself?

A: Laminate floors are designed for do it yourself customers. No adhesives and click together floating technology make it one of the easiest floors to install.
Q: What are the advantages and disadvantages to laminate floors?

A: Advantages: Laminate can give you the look of a hardwood floor at about the third of the cost. They are extremely durable (You can put a cigarette out on them!) and family friendly. Some of the higher end laminates that have recently come on the market are extremely realistic looking and very easy to install. Disadvantages: Laminate floors do not have the perceived value like a hardwood floor and will not appraise at a higher value. Because they are floating, some will have an echo when walked on with heels. There are underlayments that you can upgrade to that greatly reduces this noise.
Q: Can I install laminate over my existing flooring?

A: As long as it is smooth, flat, and dry, yes. You cannot install over carpeting but you can install over tile, wood, and vinyl. Please check with the manufacturer for specifics.
